Synopsis
Maya Mridanga is a film based on Syed Mustafa Siraj’s novel that tries to throw light on the psychology
of artistes and the varied motivations that drive them. With music being the central theme, the film
revolves around the lives of the folk musicians of Birbhum and Murshidabad.
Syed Mustafa Siraj’s novel deals with the psychology of artists. What drives an artiste to stick to an art
form all his life? Is it money, fame, success or affluence? The novel says that none of these, it is maya or
the illusion involved in creativity which drags the artist towards the creation.
Music holds the key in the film Maya Mridanga. The film revolves around folk artistes of Birbhum and
Murshidabad. Driven by illusion, an artiste loses interest in his family. He is misinterpreted by society;
his artistic confidence misunderstood as arrogance. His impatience passed off as madness. On the one
hand, he gets love from people; on the other hand, suffers from dissatisfaction. Sex, live in relationship,
homosexuality, man with two wives, everything is there in this film.
